Many people still don’t understand the meaning of “Christ”. Some even think it is just another name for Jesus.
“Christ” is the Greek word “Christos”, which means “Anointed.” So “Jesus Christ” simply means “Jesus the Anointed One”. But anointed for what purpose?
Now, anointing someone in those days was more like an inauguration ceremony where the man takes an oath, and is sworn in to discharge to the specific duties of a given office.
So, the “Anointed One” was expected to reconcile all mankind back to God, which implied taking away the sin of man by paying the price of a shameful death on the cross.
Now, John the Baptist, knowing the assignment of the Christ, didn’t think it was just fun accepting the title, so he testified he was not the Christ. “Christ” is an office or a position of responsibility which was occupied by the man Jesus. Ponderโฆ
So, to call Jesus the Christ is to admit that the sin of the world has been taken away by Him, and all humanity has been reconciled to God. But if you deny this, then you may be practicing Judaism where their “christ” is yet to come.
From today, may you always call the name “Jesus Christ” with the right understanding of His finished works, in His holy name. Amen
