Growing up as a child in a Pentecostal church, one would think that evangelism is simply an act of going out to invite people to your church either for a program or for fellowship. But this is not how the Bible describes an evangelist.
The word “evangelist” only appears 3 times in the entire Bible, and it is the Greek word “euaggelisteฬs” which means a bringer of good tidings especially New Testament heralds of salvation through Christ.
Looking at the above definition, you see that being an evangelist means something more than just inviting people to church. So the mission of the evangelist was to announce the salvation of Christ to all men – and they did it.
About 15 years ago, the “evangelist” was one of the most prestigious ministry titles in Cameroon. Today no one wants to bear the title again. To them, it is more of a title than an assignment.
And modern-day theology teaches that an evangelist is someone who convicts people to come to church or join Christianity in any church or denomination. But without telling people the finished works of Christ, that would not be evangelism.
So what did the evangelists have as assignment? To inform the world that Christ has taken away sin, and prepare them to face the reality of living a life of righteousness. Their job was done and they passed the baton to pastors.
May the Holy Spirit grant you an understanding of the office of the evangelist and where we are today, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
