Today’s Devotional…
In Matthew 5:17, Jesus Himself clearly stated that He did not come to destroy or abolish the law, or the prophets. True.
And this is the portion of scripture many pastors and churches use to uphold the law of Moses and keep their followers continually bound.
However, these pastors and denominations completely ignore a crucial detail at the end of Jesus statement in that verse – a conclusion which changes EVERYTHING!
Jesus added that He did not come to destroy the law, but to FULFILL it!
Now, while these Christians continue to argue that Jesus did not come to abolish the law, they do not care at all to find out what Jesus actually meant when He said He would “fulfill” that law.
Note that when Jesus talks about the fulfillment of the law, He is protecting the law more like a promise pending “fulfillment”.
This was actually true because scriptures held that the wages of sin was death, and all in the world at the time had sinned. So, death was the only pending thing for the law to be indeed FULFILLED.
Now, what Jesus simply meant by coming to fulfill the law was that He came to (somehow,) “kill” all sinners.
In John 12:32, Jesus said: “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me”. This was His “execution plan” for all sinful mankind – carry all of them to the cross, and make them pay the ultimate price for their sins there. Period!
The death of Christ on the cross is a mystery that holds the death of all sinful mankind, and the fulfillment of the law. For it was on the cross that the world that had long been found guilty of sin, finally experienced the pending death penalty that loomed over the whole world. Ponder…
So, yes; Paul is right in stating as recorded in our opening verse, that Jesus Christ is the end of the law. Selah!
We are no longer in the era of the law, but in the era of life – the life of Christ in all men. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made _sinners_ free from the law of sin and death”. (Rom 8:2 KJV) Selah.
May the gentle Holy Spirit decode these mysteries and reveal them to you in all simplicity, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
