The word “gospel” is the Greek word “euaggelion,” which comes from the root “euaggelizoฬ,” which simply means to bring good news or to announce glad tidings in general.
In the Old Testament, the word was used to announce any kind of good news. But in the New Testament, it has a more specific meaning.
The gospel we preach is not just some “good news” or any; it is uniquely the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
This good news is not about Jesus Christ, but the good news is Christ Himself.
The good news of Christ was not for Christ but for man who was helpless in sin. Jesus Christ was not good news for Himself but for man.
In fact, Jesus did not need any other good news because He was born perfect. On the contrary, all men had sinned and were all awaiting the death penalty for sin, and so desperately needed this good news of their acquittal.
So, Jesus, coming to bear the sin of all sinful mankind in Himself, was good news to all men who didn’t know what to do about their sin nature since the fall of Adam.
Telling the story of some Hebrew boy who lived, died, and resurrected after three days some thousands of years ago; without actually pointing to the annihilation of the sin of mankind, is not any good news to man. At best, it is just an interesting story.
Good news is generally subjective, because what one may consider to be good news, may not necessarily be good news to another.
But when we talk about “the” gospel of Christ, it is definite. It is NOT subjective. It is good news to everyone, because all had sinned, and all had been saved in His death and resurrection.
The gospel of Christ is not a subject of individual choice; it is “the gospel” whether you accept it or not, because it was God’s love gift to rescue His beloved humanity from sin. Ponder…
May the Holy Spirit reveal this mystery of “the” gospel to you in its totality, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
