Today’s Devotional…
Reading the above verse, immediately brings the following questions to mind: “
1. Who/what is Adam?
2. Who/what is Christ
3. What is death?
4. What really is life?
First of all, you must notice that the “Adam” in our opening verse stands for something deeper than just the first human God created.
Adam in this context represents all humankind before the cross (from the first man God created, to the last child that was born before the death of Christ).
The one thing they all had in common was sin. As it was written, all of them had sinned, not necessarily by their own acts but by the one act of disobedience from the very first man Adam.
Now, why would the apostle Paul make such an audacious conclusion that ALL men in this “Adam” died? Well, it is because from the scriptures, the wages (or salary) for sin was death, whatever the sin was. So it was safe to conclude that all men in Adam had died.
Now, what is still a bone of contention amongst today’s Christians is the definition of Christ, and the definition of life.
Christ in this context is obviously not just the man who was crucified some 2000 years ago, but figuratively all humankind after the cross (From the first child born after the cross, to the last child that will be born on this earth)
Romans 8:2 states clearly that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made all men in Adam free from the law of sin and death.
So, life, is living in Christ. And living in Christ is living after the cross; and living with that consciousness is living the Christ life. But as they say: “When use is not known, abuse is simply inevitable”
To live a good life is to be awakened to the consciousness of the finished works of Christ. Ponder…
May the Holy Spirit grant you understanding in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
