WHAT IS SIN?

1 John 3: 4  Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

Today’s Devotional…

What is sin? Almost every Christian believes he/she knows the answer to this question, but I bet you that if 100 Christians from different denominations were to be asked this question, you would get 100 different answers. (You can give it a try)

A majority of Christians believe that sin is when you do something “wrong” or “bad” except that “wrong” or “bad” is defined differently by different Christians across the body of Christ.

Whereas it is obvious that all Christians share a common belief of what sin is when it comes to acts like killing or adultery, a debate seems to arise when you consider acts like lying or loving one another, where the intensity to qualify the act is subjectively defined by every individual.

Today, what is acceptable as normal in one church is a taboo in another church and is labeled a sin. But do you think God really left the definition of sin (and righteousness) to man, or maybe He has the accurate definition of both? Ponder…

And to the few who try to use our opening verse as a definition of sin, remember that “the law” in that verse refers to a total of 613 different laws that Moses wrote, although most Christians (and even their pastors) think the law is only the 10 commandments. Laughable.

And worse, many churches today (according to their subjective beliefs) have added so many more laws to the list Moses left for the Jews.

Well, if you will accept it, sin is not what you do or do not do. Sin was simply the nature of man before the cross. But more importantly, righteousness is the nature of man after the cross. Ponder…

May the Holy Spirit help you digest this and make it clearer in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
