Today’s Devotional…
Who is a sinner? Sadly, the response of many to the question above will be that all are sinners, erroneously referencing the infamous Romans 3:23 and citing their works of the flesh.
But before you go on counting the different acts that you think make you a sinner, read our opening verse once again together with the verse below, and, ponder…
Rom 5:14 KJV Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
So, try again: who is a sinner? Or rather, who WAS a sinner? (If you are catching the light…)
And if you should say a sinner is a transgressor of the law, referencing 1John 3:4, which says sin is the transgression of the law, then you would be erroneously concluding that righteousness is the non-transgression (or obedience) of the law, thereby eliminating the need for the Messiah Jesus Christ.
See what is recorded in Galatians 3:21: “…for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. So, why then was the law given?
The answer is given in Rom 3:19-20: “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin”
In conclusion, you simply cannot describe a sinner by works. God, in all His wisdom, made it this way so that all men would understand that you equally should not describe a righteous man by His works. (Yet many still deny this)
A sinner was simply anyone who lived in Adam (who died some 2000 years ago). A righteous man is anyone who lives in Christ (who was born some 2000 years ago). This is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
May your thoughts be provoked and the eyes of your understanding be enlightened, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
