Zeal is good; but without knowledge, zeal could be destructive.

Picture an energetic and zealous football player who enters the field towards the end of the match, when all other players are exhausted; if he doesn’t know the football rules, he may waste all the efforts his team suffered to put in for almost the entire match.

This was exactly the position of Israel at the time of Paul’s writing, and it is the position of many today.

When you have a zeal for God but have not had the patience to sit down and study the scriptures judiciously, you will only end up as a brainwashed militant in the hands of religious extremists.

We have seen these zealots recruited by Islamic extremist groups as terrorists. In Christianity, we have seen them commanded to starve to death or drink poisonous substances and they did.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:7 that: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding”

Without knowledge, your zeal is a waste of energy. And this is where many Christians are found today; they struggle really hard to please a God who is already pleased in Christ, simply because they lack knowledge of the finished works of Christ.

May the Holy Spirit grant you the patience you need to study the scriptures and to get RELEVANT knowledge of the scriptures so that your zeal may become useful in the Kingdom of God, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
