Did you know that the famous Ten Commandments we know today were NOT written to you?
The Ten Commandments were addressed to a very specific audience: the Israelites who were slaves in Egypt, whom God brought out by His power through the Ten Plagues.
These were Israelites who had lived as slaves in Egypt all their lives and were freed for the first time, but could not manage their liberty in the wilderness.
They were Israelites who had worshipped Egyptian idols their entire lives and continued to struggle with idolatry in the wilderness.
The Ten Commandments were addressed to a group of people whose minds had been disfigured by centuries of slavery and harsh treatment.
For an average Israelite in Egypt, lying (or even killing) was not necessarily seen as sinโit was a survival strategy. These people were the audience of the Ten Commandments.
These Israelites saw God manifest powerfully through the Ten Plagues. They saw Him part the sea into two, allowing them to cross on dry ground; and yet, they still doubted Him. This was Mosesโ audience.
If you do not fit into this exact audience, then you may never fully understand (or even dare to obey) the Ten Commandments.
And you, have you ever been to Egypt? Have you ever been a slave? Have you ever been freed? Are you an Israelite? Have you ever been to the wilderness?
May the search for answers open your spirit to the truth of the gospel, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
