Signs are simply signposts that point to a destination or an object, not to themselves.
This understanding alone can emancipate you from religious bondage and spiritual manipulation.
When you understand signs as signposts, you will understand why Jesus could only refer the people to the sign of Jonah.
If you follow road signs that lead you to a school and finally get there, then find the principal and ask him again to show you a sign of the school, what does that make you? Ponderโฆ
Jonah’s story was a signpost pointing to Christ, and Christ is both the object and the destination. How then do you ask Jesus, who is the destination, to show you a sign? It doesn’t make sense.
Likewise, it doesn’t make sense to settle for a sign instead of using it to locate the object. It is like stopping at a signboard that says, “UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE,” and hoping to study there and obtain a certificate. Laughable!
It is the same with signs and miracles. When you focus on them and not on the Christ to whom they point, you miss the mark (hamartia). Ponderโฆ
No matter how big a hospital signboard may be, it cannot cure malaria. Similarly, no magnitude of signs and wonders can replace the revelation of Christ. Ponderโฆ
So, stop seeking signs and wonders. Rather, observe them to determine whether they are of God and whether they point to Christ. If they do not, ignore them.
May the Holy Spirit continue to be your Helper, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
