LAW OR FAITH?

Today’s Devotional…

Many Christians today get very confused as to how their righteousness comes about, especially when you put the law and faith together before them.

Many Christians believe that they become righteous when they exercise some faith in Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour; but at the same time, they still hold that they must continue to obey the laws of Moses to somehow preserve or maintain this gift of salvation. Laughable!

This school of thought, is simply a theological tautology, and a religious fallacy. For it is either by the law that man is saved or by faith, but not both. And if by law, then faith is useless, and if by faith, then the law was needless. Ponder…

This is what the apostle Paul was addressing in our opening verse above, as well as in many other portions of his letters. The apostle makes it clear that both were necessary.

The Law therefore was a prerequisite for faith to be manifested. So, yes, faith did not destroy the Law, for it was thanks to the law that man saw the need for grace which could only come by Jesus Christ.

The true purpose of the law was to bring the conviction of sin to all men; and to present God’s standard for holiness, which was completely unattainable by any man, therefore triggering the need to seek Christ, (the only one in whom this righteousness was found)

This is why the apostle went further to say in Romans 10:4, that Christ was the end of the law. This is because it was Christ who brought to realization, the one thing that the law struggled to no avail to give man  – that is righteousness!

Jesus Christ Himself confirmed this when He declared that He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfil it. If the law had not required that the soul that sinned should die, of what use would the death of Jesus had been? Ponder…

So, yes! Faith establishes the law but does not enforce it because the law is obsolete. So, salvation was by faith alone – the faith of Christ. Our faith is just a reflection of  His faith.

May the eyes of your understanding be enlightened, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
