Today’s Devotionalโ€ฆ

In the book of Joshua 11:6, this is recorded: “And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”

If God had allowed them to keep the chariots and horses, they would have turned their faith away from the LORD their God to the horses and chariots, just as the Egyptians did.

But if horses and chariots could really guarantee victory, the Egyptian horsemen with their horses and chariots would not have ended up at the bottom of the Red Sea.

God told Joshua to incapacitate the horses and burn the chariots simply because He wanted them to know that He was still capable of giving them victory every other time.

Listen, God may use someone or something to deliver you out of a situation; but you should NEVER turn your attention from God to that person or thing He used.

However, this is where many Christians often go wrong. Instead of turning their gaze back to the God who sent them help through someone or something, they idolize the people and things God used instead of God. What a pity.

In the book of Judges 15:17, after Samson had slain a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, he threw away the bone. You see, Samson understood that the victory came from the LORD and not from a bone.

I have a question for you: “Right now, where is your confidence?” Think about that for a momentโ€ฆ

If something were to happen to you in the middle of the night, who would you call first, God or man? What gives you the assurance that you will eat tomorrow? Is it the job you have, the money in your account, or just God? Ponderโ€ฆ

Listen, your “horses and chariots”, (the people and things you trust in) may fail you as they failed the Egyptians.

Why trust in money instead of the God who gives men the power to make wealth? Why trust in men instead of the God who sets up and removes kings, and changes times and seasons at will? Ponderโ€ฆ

Turn your heart away from people and things that can fail. Look to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. He never sleeps, and He never slumbers. He is the only one who can bring you water even out of a rock when no man can help.

May your confidence always be in the LORD your God from today, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
